Carried over from November and carried over to January 2026
The maze runner by James Dashner on Audible
Oh dear, I started this before I realised the author is so problematic. It was free with Audible so I hope that means he didn't profit from it
But it's a really good story and the narrator was fantastic one of the best I've heard in a lon time, hence the 4 stars 4 🌟
A whale of a crime by Mona Marple
I was surprised to be a bit disappointed in this from Mona Marple, normally I love everything she writes but this one just left me cold, a so so mystery and MCs I just didn't gel with, it was an OK read but not what I normally expect from her 3 🌟
The embalmer by Alison Belsham
Absolutely gripping, I have read one other of the series and loved it too.
Great plot, good pacing and believable characters. A great sense of place too, love the Brighton location 4 🌟
Dead in the water by Ed James
Hmmmmm I was going to DNF this but there was enough to keep me going.
It says its "revised and expanded" I don't think that was necessarily a good thing. In the beginning there were far too many strands going in all sorts of different directions it just became annoying. It did however come together towards the end 3.25 🌟
Chaucer and the house of fame by Philip Gooden
Quite disappointed, I've really enjoyed other series by this author but this was just a bit boring? Not badly written, its well researched but just a bit bland I think. I had expected Chaucer to be a more engaging character 3 🌟
Savage run by CJ Box
Another fantastic addition to this series. Great plot, engaging authentic characters just perfect 5 🌟
Lace and lies by Nancy Warren
Another really enjoyable installment in this series, inventive mystery, great characters. I love seeing the back stories develop 4.5🌟
Celebrated cases of Judge Dee by Robert Van Gulik on Audible
I'm aiming to reread this whole series, this one is the only one I couldn't find digitally
An excellent narrator, I had forgotten about the torture scenes but still enjoyed it 4.5 🌟
The way that it falls by Robin Roughley
Eh dear my first DNF of 2026, sooooo much misogyny in this DNF
1793 wolf and the watchman by Niklas Natt Och Dag
Just way too gory for me, well written but far too gruesome DNF
A tale of two bodies by Mona Marple
Very enjoyable addition to the series. Nice to see some more back story developing 4 🌟
Murder at the Abbey by Irina Shapiro
This is turning out to be such a lovely series. Im really invested in the two MC and their backstories are developing nicely. The murder itself is satisfying , not too convoluted. 4.5 🌟
Book of the unnamed midwife by Meg Ellison
Just far too bleak DNF
Xenopraxis by Gary Gibson
I really enjoyed this, a good sci fi romp. A few issues, even though I read the first installment recently I still found it difficult to keep up with who was who and what was what, especially with multiple versions of the smae person. A review suggested it needed a good editor I agree. But once it got going it was very entertaining 4 🌟
Bobbles and broomstick by Nancy Warren
Such a lovely addition to the series, I love the backstory, more being revealed alon side an entertaining mystery 4.5 🌟
Romes executioner by Robert Fabbri
Loving this series, it can be gruesome in places but is so well researched and written. Looking forward to the next installment 4 🌟
Eden lost by Andrew Cunningham
Im really getting into this series. There is a simplicity to the writing whic I like. The story and characters are engaging but not too complex, I mean that in a good way 4 🌟
The eye of the red Tsar on Audible by Sam Eastland
Just perfect, Inspector Pekkala is an intriguing main character. Gripping plot, great historical accuracy. Perfect narration by Stephen Pacey.
5🌟
The Ely testament by Philip Gooden
Bit disappointed in this addition to the series, it felt disjointed. Too many strands and some felt tenuous. I did mostly enjoy it but not as good as the others in the series 3.5 🌟
Planting of the penny hedge by Chris Turnbull
Really unsure about this one? While it was enjoyable the ending felt very rushed and sudden, obviously set up for a sequel but it felt like 85% scene setting and 15% resolution 3.5 🌟
The quickening and the dead by J.C. Briggs
Excellent addition to the series. I love how this series mirrors Dickens feelings and campaigning for the poor and destitute, this really evokes the feel of the period 4.5 🌟
Rescue me from paradise by Jordan Rivet
Really enjoyable addition to the series. It's great to see the storyline branching out in new directions but maintaining a continuum throughout 4.25 🌟
Popcorn and poltergeist by Nancy Warren
Really lovely addition to the series. I love the layers in the back story, each installment adds richness to them. A good mystery to boot.
4.75 🌟
Gather the bones by Alison Stuart
Alison Stuart writes brilliant historical mysteries with a touch of romance. Nothing too heavy on either element, blending good historical detail with an intriguing mystery and satisfying romance 5 🌟
So! Lets sum up January! finishing off my KU subscription, just one more book to go and then I can switch off airplane mode! I am really getting into poast apocalyptic Sci fi, its nice to find new authors since i loved sci fi as a child. Also historical fiction, i am leaning into the more romantic historical mysteries, particularly Alison Stuart. The Vampire knitting club is becoming a fast favourite. Also loving revisiting the Inspector Pekkala stories.
